9999Globaltoday.id, Lumajang – The Pemerintah Kabupaten Lumajang is speeding up repairs and maintenance of public street lighting (PJU) across several areas as part of a broader effort to improve public safety and community protection.
The local government now considers street lighting not merely as supporting infrastructure, but as an essential public service directly connected to people’s safety and daily activities.
Regent Indah Amperawati stated that proper street lighting plays a major role in creating a safer and more comfortable environment, especially at night.
“We understand that street lighting is very important for the community. Dark roads make people feel unsafe when carrying out activities, so the repairs must be accelerated,” she said on Saturday (May 9, 2026).
Street Lighting Supports Safety and Economic Activity
According to the Regent, adequate lighting can help reduce crime risks while also supporting economic activities and smoother public mobility.
The administration believes that public infrastructure should not only function technically, but also provide a sense of security for residents.
Although some roads are under the authority of the provincial government, the Lumajang administration has continued to coordinate across agencies to ensure damaged lights can be repaired quickly.
“We have coordinated and requested permission to replace damaged street lights. Even if the roads are outside regional authority, public interests must come first,” she explained.
Transportation Office Ordered to Respond Quickly
The local government has instructed the Dinas Perhubungan Kabupaten Lumajang to accelerate repairs in poorly lit areas and roads with high traffic activity.
Meanwhile, Lumajang Police Chief Alex Sandy Siregar emphasized that proper lighting is an important part of crime prevention efforts, as dark roads are often used by criminals.
“Several vulnerable locations have already been repaired, and more improvements will continue as a preventive measure,” he said.
