Globaltoday.id, Lumajang, June 30, 2025 — The cultural spirit once again echoes from the southern coast of Lumajang. Topeng Kaliwungu, a symbol of local wisdom among coastal communities, returned to the spotlight through the grand dance drama titled “Segoro Topeng Kaliwungu”, held as part of the annual cultural agenda in Selok Awar-awar Village, Pasirian District, Lumajang Regency.
This performance unites elements of theatrical arts, maritime spirituality, and the philosophy of a people deeply connected to the sea. By promoting local wisdom and cultural preservation, this event is not just a visual spectacle, but also a reflection of identity and a form of cultural diplomacy that brings Lumajang to national and even global recognition.
“Segoro Topeng is not just a performance — it is an embodiment of identity and spirituality for the people of Lumajang who live in harmony with the ocean. This is cultural diplomacy that must continue to be developed,” said Ni Luh Puspa, Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia, after watching the show.
In the nearly two-hour performance, hundreds of dancers from various local art groups combined traditional Kaliwungu mask movements with the drama of coastal life. The show depicted the relationship between humans and nature, the struggles of fishermen, and mystical symbols believed to guard the southern sea.
According to the Deputy Minister, Topeng Kaliwungu has great potential to be recognized as an intangible cultural heritage on the world stage. “This mask speaks in silence and tells stories through movement. With strong narratives and professional packaging, I believe Segoro Topeng can become a world-class cultural attraction,” she added.
Yuli Haris, Head of the Lumajang Tourism Office, stated that the event has been included in the annual calendar and is expected to become a cultural icon of East Java’s coastline.
“This mask is our face. The people of Kaliwungu preserve it not only as an art form but also as an ancestral heritage full of spirituality,” he explained.
With growing appreciation for local arts and support from the central government, the Segoro Topeng Kaliwungu performance is expected to elevate Lumajang’s cultural tourism potential to the world stage — making it not just Lumajang’s treasure, but a proud cultural legacy of the Indonesian archipelago.
