Night Patrols Revived in Lumajang, Villages Become Frontline of Community Security

Globaltoday.id, Lumajang – The Pemerintah Kabupaten Lumajang is reviving the neighborhood security system, locally known as siskamling, as part of efforts to strengthen social resilience and rebuild community solidarity from the village level.

The program is not only focused on maintaining public security, but also on restoring the spirit of mutual cooperation and social awareness among residents, values that have long been part of village culture.

Regent Indah Amperawati explained that community security becomes stronger when residents actively participate in protecting their own neighborhoods together.

For this reason, the local government has started directing hamlet funds to support the reactivation of siskamling activities and provide appreciation for community security officers (Linmas) who actively help maintain public order.

“Hamlet funds are being used to revive and strengthen neighborhood security systems. One of the efforts is giving appreciation to Linmas members so the spirit of protecting the community continues to grow,” Bunda Indah said on Friday night (May 9, 2026).

More Than Security, Siskamling Strengthens Social Bonds

According to the Regent, night patrol activities are not merely about guarding the neighborhood, but also about creating social interaction and strengthening relationships among residents.

Amid social changes and increasing public mobility, community-based activities such as siskamling are considered important for maintaining solidarity and social awareness at the grassroots level.

“What we want to build is not only territorial security, but also togetherness and care among residents. When people know and care about each other, social resilience will naturally grow,” she explained.

Preventive Security Through Community Participation

The strengthening of siskamling is also viewed as a preventive security approach that directly involves local communities in maintaining neighborhood stability.

Through night patrols and regular communication among residents, communities can improve vigilance against potential security disturbances while also reinforcing social connections.

The Lumajang government hopes the revival of siskamling culture can become part of a broader effort to create a more participatory and sustainable social development system.

The initiative reflects the idea that public security is not built solely through surveillance and law enforcement, but also through cooperation, mutual care, and collective responsibility within orsociety.
